Since 1990, The Community Mediation Center, a United Way Community Partner, and the only not-for-profit mediation center in southeastern Virginia, assists people, organizations, and communities with problems or conflict situations.

Our Goals

• Improving communication, understanding, and empathy
• Enhancing relationships
• Promoting mutual cooperation to resolve a problem or dispute
• Gathering information resources to enable parties to make their own decisions and implement their own solutions

Over the next 10 years we plan to

1. Reaffirm our basic civic and community organizing roots
2. Expand Conflict resolution services to other community organizations, groups, and businesses
3. Promote the development of comprehensive community plans for service delivery of conflict resolution and prevention
4. Expand the Center's expertise to assist the community with change management resulting from conflict in broad social and community wide issues

Long Range Objectives:

• To be South Hampton Road's leading source for conflict prevention and conflict resolution training
• To educate public on the benefits and use of conflict resolution and mediation
• To build capacity of community groups and organizations (public and private human services, civic groups, youth, older adults, etc.) to more effectively resolve, reduce, and prevent conflict.
