Volunteer Opportunities

The Community Mediation Center uses volunteers to fufill its mission. Many volunteer positions are available for a variety of ages, backgrounds, and skill level. The primary responsibilities of volunteers are to develop the Center’s Conflict Resolution and Mediation programs by working with local governments, courts, and other human service agencies so that more families, youth and neighbors can have greater access to mediation and conflict resolution alternatives. If you are interested in volunteering, please read below to find a description that meets your level of committment and interests!

AmeriCorps Volunteers

AmeriCorps members organize the Center's volunteers and work in the community to to provide training and education in conflict resolution. During their tenure of 1 year or 1,700 hours, they receive benefits from the government including a living stipend and health insurance. The Center has several AmeriCorps positions available for those interested in making a difference.

Internship / Externship

Students studying in fields such as law, business, and counseling are encouraged to intern at the Community Mediation Center, where they will participate is numerous aspects of Center operations. Interns will work in community outreach, client services, developing presentations, coordinating volunteers, and more. This position is invaluable to those interested in learning how a non-profit is run.

Conflict Coaching

Often, when parents are having problems, the children suffer as well. The Center, as part of its "Keeping it Together" program, is looking for volunteers to mentor parents in coping with the other parent for the benefit of the child and developing plans to resolve, reduce, and prevent conflict to create a healthy family. Training for those interested is free of charge.

CMC/NEC Neighborhood Clean Up Days

The Community Mediation Center, in partnership with the Norfolk Environmental Commission, has committed to keeping our neighborhood clean! Youth Conflict Resolution Trainer

Often times, teens are not given the tools they will need to prepare for conflict in their schools, families, neighborhoods and workplaces. Community Mediation Center uses volunteers to lead workshops aimed at teaching teens these important communication skills. Volunteers can learn the curriculum through workshops, shadowing experienced trainers, and their own on-the-job experience. On average, volunteers work with teens in the after-school hours between two and six times over one to two months. Golf Tournament

Each year Community Mediation Center hosts an annual golf tournament fundraiser with the Better Business Bureau to raise funds for CMC's youth violence prevention and family mediation programs. Volunteers are needed before and during the golf tournament. Before the tournament volunteers are needed to secure donations for raffle prize gifts, sell raffle tickets, and organize sponsorships and teams. During the golf tournament volunteers are needed to rove the course, assist players, oversee the prize table, and clean up after the day. Mediators

Do you want to make a difference in your community? The Center is accepting volunteer mediators to help carry out its mission. People certified as mediators and mentors can mediate General or Family cases at the Center or at local courts, and assist in case management. Additionally, certified mediators and mentors can assist in working with city courts as well as act as court liaison. Training for certification is available at the Center for a fee.
